1205 Strategic Goal - Writing - Progress Report - 8 May 2012

Focus:                         Written Language

Strategic Aim:              To create a community of learners with high academic achievement in writing.

To create a community of Maori learners with high academic achievement in writing.

Annual Aim for 2012:    To improve the percentage of pupils working above the National Standards at years 2, 4 and 6.

Rationale:

2011 results showed that we need to concentrate our literacy efforts more on written language. Very few of our pupils are achieving at or above the national standard for writing and this will need to be an area for our staff to focus on in 2012. Presently the percentages of pupils who are writing at or above the National Standard are 18% for year 2, 3% for year 4 and 19% for year 6.

Writing goal

Measurable Target. To increase the percentage of pupils writing at or above the National Standard:

Writing goal for 2012. To increase the number of pupils writing at or above the National Standard

·       For pupils in their second year of schooling to 48% (24 pupils) at the end of 2012

·       For year 4, from 43% in February (18 pupils) at the start of 2012 to 60% (24 pupils) at the end of 2012

·       For year 6, from 36% in February 10 pupils) at the start of 2012 to 70% (20 pupils) at the end of 2012

Mid year review

Firstly, a reminder that these expectations are “by the end of the year” or, “at the end of their second year”. These results are from term 1, so we have three terms to go.

We have two 6 year old pupils who have reached the National Standard for children at the end of their second year of school already.

Teacher judgement is that another 8 should achieve the goal by the end of their second year making 28% at the national standard. Although some of the younger children still have a year to go and some will probably write at level 2i we will are unlikely to reach our goal of 48% of our pupils being “at or above” by their 7th birthday.

We have two year 4 pupils who have reached the National Standard already.

Teacher judgement is that another 7 should achieve the goal by the end of the year making 25% at the national standard. Although some of the children currently working at level 1iii and even some at level 1ii could make the standard by years end, we are unlikely to reach our goal of 60% of our pupils being “at or above” by December.

We have three year 6 pupils who have reached the National Standard already.

Teacher judgement is that between 3 and 11 more should achieve the goal by the end of the year making between 23% and 54% at the national standard. Unless we can coax huge progress from some of the children currently achieving at level 1iii, we are unlikely to reach our goal of 70% of our pupils being “at or above” by December.
