Curriculum Report – Health and Physical Education
Our vision continues to strive towards having more students involved in sports and health initiatives. This includes looking at ways to adapt and adopt sports and activities that are inclusive for all children, including our special rights tamariki. With an inevitable change of children, whanau and some staff each year, our goals continue to be:
To have more parent input and involvement in what and how sports and health initiatives are run in our kura.
To have our staff including more physical education in their programmes.
To build relationships with community, schools and other organisations to create more inter-school tournaments and in school training sessions.
We also continue to provide food and clothing to our tamariki and whanau and encourage attendance in school by removing barriers. This includes Breakfast Club each morning in the school hall and food including fruit, milk, bread and snacks in every classroom. We also endeavour to share food across our community where a need is seen.
Programme:
Term 1:
This year started with Water Safety NZ coming into our school during the first term and completing workshops with each class, promoting water safety skills. Each class was given 4 sessions.
Mrs Stillwell trained a group of tamariki to Waitangi to participate in the 2019 Weetbix Tryathlon. Lydia and Mrs Stillwell ran it on the day
Our school hockey team participated in the Hockey Fun Fest at Lindvart Park.

Bikes, teachers can take their tamariki on their own accord. Helmets are provided.
PE monitors going around classes delivering and collecting PE gear daily.
HEALTH AND FOOD (every term)
Kidscan Snacks are readily accessible in every classroom and Kaz monitors and distributes food for classrooms.
Breakfast Club is coordinated to run in the hall every morning from 8 - 8.45 and two teacher aides volunteer their time to run this on a roster with Kaz overseeing.
Milk is delivered every second week and stored in the fridge at the back of the hall for classes to access. This is provided through Fonterra Milk in schools programme.
Bread is delivered each week for classes, breakfast club and lunches.
Fruit is delivered twice and week and distributed to classes and given out to whanau when there is a surplus. We also share surplus with local daycares. Kohanga and Kura.
Kidscan also provide Tissues, Nit treatment, sanitary items, hand sanitiser and clothing including shoes, jackets and socks as required.
Term 2:
x3 Netball and x3 Hockey teams participated every Saturday morning at Lindvart. Training was held during lunchtimes once or twice a week.
Fire Brigade Sports - Hockey, Netball, Soccer and Rippa Rugby with local schools.
Project Energize - Fui came into school a few times to meet with our sports monitors and took a rotation of class sessions for skill development. For juniors it was Fundamental skills such as; hopping, balance and skipping. With the seniors and middles he helped train for Fire Brigade Sports.
Fui Had focus of Healthy Kai and Hockey again.

Term 3:
x3 Netball teams participated every Saturday morning at Lindvart.Training was held during lunchtimes once or twice a week.

2 league teams participated at Lindvart Park every Wednesday after school.
Term 4:
Kaikohe East School Cross Country Event held at School. Whole school participation was essential. Training took place most days.
3x T-Ball teams played at Lindvart Park every Wednesday. Training was held lunchtimes and in the afternoon blocks.
6x Touch teams played at Lindvart Park every Thursday. Training was held lunchtimes and in the afternoon blocks.
Room 15 tamariki participated in the Kaikohekohe Primary Games with local schools over 2 days at Lindvart Park.
Fui from Project Energize worked with the touch teams for training.
Swimming commenced again from week 5, with teachers taking classes for basic swimming skills.

Year 6 sports girl and sports boy award given at senior prizegiving. Staff consulted with re nominations.
We reflect on previous years and compare numbers of student involvement in weekend sports.
We reflect on how many sports initiatives and opportunities have been taken.
We reflect on which tamariki are participating and which are opting out of Physical Education and why they are doing so.
Swim safe complete an overall assessment once sessions have concluded. This involves ensuring tamariki are able to float, tread water and immerse.
The results show that this year we have been very much involved with anything and everything that has been available to us in our area. However, there seem to be the same tamariki involved throughout all of the sports. We would like to encourage different players also.
Teaching of Health and Physical education is variable across classes. There are different skills, interests and strengths amongst staff and we continue to source the strengths in our staff, school and local community to give our tamariki opportunities. Children’s attendance has been noticeably increased with the offer of food, particularly Breakfast Club.
Relationships with whanau and the wider community strengthened with the sharing of kai.
Tamariki who are not participating in Physical Education
Kids who live out of town and can’t make it to practices or games after school hours.
Students with a physical/cognitive challenges
Whanau and tamariki in low income situations
Regular promotion of physical health, make it fun and encourage teachers to try different ways of getting their tamariki to be active. Ten minute brain breaks: Maori Movement, Jump Jam, Hip Hop etc.
Getting in touch with parents of the kids who are keen but can’t come into town and working out places for them to stay on these nights.
Holding our own sports events during the day so that tamariki from out of town can participate.
Liaise with Kaz our SENCO and help the Special Rights tamariki be more involved in sports in our community i.e Wheelchair basketball, Special Olympics, RDA etc.
Regularly engage the support of our SWIS, Lucy to help deliver food parcels to whanau as needed.
Identify children who need shoes and provide these to them as required.
Regularly stock up on nit solution and Tissues as required.
We will continue to get coaches in from Sport Northland to promote Physical education.
The bikes and track to continue to be maintained and included in the budget as a priority.
Collaborative discussion as a staff to encourage, support and develop physical education.
Health and PE coordinators continue organisation and have a Physical Education Overview made up of each of the sports events that are throughout the year so teachers and whanau know well in advance. Display all events for each term on the whiteboard in the staffroom, regular emails and notices to whanau about what is coming up.
Encourage more teachers and whanau involved in our sports programme as our tamariki love participating, however, due to shortage of coaches/supervision at events we are unable to cater for them all.
Health and PE essence statement - all our curriculum statements are currently being reviewed as supported by Brian Hincho from Cognition. This is to ensure we have a clear, shared vision of what Health and PE means for our school. This will be shared with the board and updated in our school website once completed in 2020.
