Focus
We have house teams sorted, and are running a successful Run, Jump, Throw programme in term 4. We now need to focus on getting house teams running throughout the year, with competitions etc. where we have a winning house at the end of the year. We need to look at getting house name plaques or something similar and get teachers and students more associated with their house and feeling a part of their assigned house group.
Weetbix triathlon was a huge success for those that attended and great motivation to get children involved.
Hockey Coach from Sport Northland ran a hockey skills programme for years 0-3 in term 1
Fundamental Skills programme was very successful for years 0-2 and was run in the second term by Sport Northland
Swim for Life programme was run by Water safe NZ in term 1 with sessions for every class.
School Cross Country was run in term 3 and was very successful.
Run-Jump-Throw programme taken through term four. This consisted of children in house teams and teachers to teach required skills to the children
Saturday sports School teams established for Hockey and netball
Thursday Afternoon school teams up and running for Touch
We have attended various sporting codes inter school competitions such as; Rippa Rugby in Kerikeri and Whangarei, Fire Brigade sports, Ohaeawai Cross Country
We have had the Football coach from football Northland in to take the whole school through some football (soccer) drills. Also he worked with a group of 15 children for 10 weeks on football drills
Turbo Touch coach from sport northland in term 2 who ran workshops for years 4-6
Sports shed relocated to room 16 and more organised and easy to access and find equipment.
Assessment for 2012 has not changed a lot since last year.
Although we have done more in terms of sport and sport/skills coaching there still is room for further improvement school wide.
Skills’ coaching was mainly done form the Coaches at Sport Northland that we got in to help.
Further professional development to engage teachers more with the teaching of Physical Education will continue in order to improve children’s skills.
In terms of next year, again, I am underway with planning a Yearly overview that will give us a direction of where we are heading in the terms of sporting codes and skills and getting house teams and competitions up and running. I am hoping this will give more motivation to our PE programme.
House competitions need to be run and part of our School Wide Programme
We would like to get a school bike track put in around the perimeter of the field. We would require 60+bikes and each class would have an allocated time throughout the day/week where they would use the track.
The system for having equipment in the playground during play and lunch will be reviewed. At the moment there is very little gear out. I would like to get about 5 bins put out perhaps outside the office where we will have gear available from one access point and will be put out in the morning and put away at the end of the day. Bins would contain; soccer balls, rugby balls, skipping ropes, bats and tennis balls etc.
End of Year Health Report 2012 Health and PE Report
Kaikohe East School has been successful in undertaking health programmes this year which has contributed to creating a Healthy Promoting school.
Here is a breakdown of those projects we have successfully achieved this year.
· Silver Heart Award. This was awarded to our school in term 4 for supporting healthy lifestyles. The ‘Health’ Team encouraged students to eat healthy choices, and investigated through a school wide survey what breakfast routines families have. They also organised competitions to support this.
· Kick Start Breakfast. This has continued throughout the year and seen an increase in the number of children attending. This was backed up by the results of a Breakfast survey and competition draw from last year. Sanitarium and Fonterra sponsor the school with supplies and classes have breakfast offered on a daily basis.
· The school garden has continued with the establishment of a garden club, this runs twice weekly. A shed was purchased, donations of native trees have been planted and a grant to build a protective fence for all plants has also been implemented. The garden was given a large amount of topsoil form the West School and this has been used to top up the large raised beds created last year. A special rabbit proof pest fence was erected around the garden for protection, through a grant. For Matariki a small raised garden was built to celebrate this special festival and its importance for our tamariki. Our school also won the Te Mananwhenua Challenge Trophy. It is hoped that classes will be able to continue with their own plots next year. Looking to 2013 a water tank and irrigation system will be installed, an extension the gardens is also planned.
· Jump Rope for Heart. Following the inspirational World Champion demonstration of last year. Jump Rope is planned for 2013.
· Zero Waste: Sue Woods gave a school wide investigation and audit into the amount of packaging accumulating in the school on a daily/weekly scale. This is still a problem that requires constant revisiting .Healthy lunchboxes will be targeted in 2013.
· Fruit in Schools: This valuable programme is still in practice and students look forward to their fruit time. The food source plays a vital component to students in their working day. There have been some wonderful selections offered this year. This continues for 2013. It will be a few years before the fruit trees in our school garden are productive.
· Milk in Schools Programme This programme was introduced as a pilot to Northland schools early this year and has continued for the whole year. The drinking of milk is vital to the healthy development of our students.
· Budget: The health and P.E budget were combined this year. Purchases for the garden were funded from the garden budget. Extra crockery and cutlery were purchased for the Breakfast Club.
· Looking to 2013: I will be working with the P.E initiatives for next year, starting with a Sun Smart programme and a Road Safety scheme. The Kick Start breakfast will continue as well as the Health Team continuing with their investigations and projects. In term 2 a Jump Rope Skipathon is planned and the Life Education programme will be scheduled for term 3. In term 4 there will be visits from St John’s.
The Health topics for 2013 have been printed in the school newsletter informing parents what the school will be covering next year. This is to ensure that consultation requitements have been addressed and
parents have the opportunity to repsond if they wish.
I have enjoyed my year as the Health co-ordinator, and look forward to 2013 and creating exciting, healthy options for the students at Kaikohe East School.
Yours sincerely,
