Welcome

This week we would like to welcome the following child their whanau to our school: Ngareta Harris-Martin.

April Holidays

The last day of Term 1 will be this Thursday 13th April. School will start again on Monday 1st May. Whanau are reminded that the school is locked throughout the holidays to ensure our school is kept safe.

A Free Course for Whanau

The Solomon Group are offering a free course for whanau called Intergenerational Education. The course will not only help you meet your WINZ commitments but allow you to gain skills to succeed. For further information please phone 0800 747687 or call into the school office for a leaflet with full information.

Kutus

Please be vigilant in checking your children’s hair on a regular basis for kutus. We still provide kutu combs and solution thanks to Kids Can.

Term 2 Topic

Beginning in Term 2 all classes will be learning about Kaitiakitanga. This work may involve such things as caring for our environment, caring for our school property, respecting each other and a range of other related ideas.

Children with challenging and severe behaviour

Whanau may be aware of the media coverage recently about schools in Tai Tokerau who are struggling with children who have challenging and severe behaviour. I am writing to let whanau know that this is a fact for us here at Kaikohe East School too. Too often we call the MOE for help, and wait too long for help to come and then if we are lucky enough to get any support it is too little.

This Thursday I will be talking to TV One about the lack of support and resourcing we seem to receive and this is not intended put down our school, our town or our whanau, it is about stating the facts. We have too many children it seems that have tempers that are at times excessive, we have too many children that at times react with their fists and we are often aware that this behaviour is occurring at home too and whanau are struggling.

I am hoping that by sharing some information with TV One that the MOE will take notice and give us the support we are asking for. Before children can be good at Literacy and Numeracy they need to be able to communicate well with others, relate well with others, develop social and emotional skills, creativity and so on. We hope that our contribution is helpful for our children that struggle with their behaviour.

Our School Pool

Our school pool is now officially closed and will be covered over the next two terms to help keep it maintained for opening again in Term 4.

Kaikohe East School Board

The Kaikohe East School Board will meet at the school at 1:30pm on Thursday 13th April, 2017.

SWIS – Whaea Lucy

A reminder that every Wednesday and Thursday we have our School Social Worker here at our school. Whaea Lucy is available to talk with tamariki and or their whanau who may need support.

Children’s Readers

Could whanau please check their homes and if they find any school readers please send them back to school. For every book returned your child will receive a “tanga” card.
