It is a great pleasure to be teaching in Room 6 this year after 3 years teaching in the Bilingual unit here at Kaikohe East School. At our school we have what we call the 4 C’s, our school values which are ‘Co-operative, Considerate, use Common sense, and Courteous’. We strive to meet these values and do our best to uphold them. To assist in achieving these my aim is to ensure we have structure in our classroom and learning, that we have set routines, clear expectations and focus on learning and succeeding. It is also important that we have positive attitudes to enable us to be open minded towards all things that we may encounter.

This term we are lucky to have Mrs Maihi helping us in Room 6 every morning. Although it may only be a short time we treasure all the help we can get.

Our learning goals for this term are as follows:

Te Reo Maori

Te Reo Maori is an integral part of our day. We start our day with karakia, himene and whaikorero. This term we are working with our tamariki on learning their whakapapa and pepeha. We use Te Reo Maori where ever we can in our everyday classroom activities, building our confidence of these skills.

Literacy/English

We h

ave a school wide goal to increase the literacy levels of our tamariki. With this goal we focus on literacy from 9:00-11:00. In Room 6 we participate in spelling, reading, writing and oral language. The children are encouraged to share news with the rest of the class, participate in shared reading sessions and write about an event, interest or something imaginary. We also have handwriting three times a week where the children learn how to correctly write each letter of the alphabet. We visit the library to explore new books every Wednesday.

Inquiry learning

Our school has a focus on using inquiry in our learning. In Room 6 we will be using questioning, different thinking tools and learning about different ways of writing down and organising our ideas.

The Reggio Approach

Our school is beginning to include aspects of the Reggio approach in day to day teaching and learning. The Reggio approach is an inspiring teaching approach which values every child as having different learning styles and being able to cater to these. It offers hands on learning allowing the children to create, explore and discover

Numeracy/MathsWe have a school wide goal to increase the numeracy levels of our tamariki. With this goal we focus on numeracy from 12:00-1:00. This term in Room 6 our focus is on numbers. Number ranges and sequencing. Forward and backward counting, skip counting and basic facts. Our maths strand that we are learning about this term is Geometry.

PE

This term our focus is swimming. We have swimming on Monday at 12:30pm, Tuesday at 12:00pm and Friday at 12:30pm. Swimming is a part of the curriculum so it is expected that all children will participate. Please help our tamariki remember to bring their togs and a towel on these days. For fitness we are participating in basic circuits; running, skipping and hopping. We will also take part in Hockey and other sport mentoring with Gina and Brad from Sport Northland.

Homework

Every child will have homework from Monday to Thursday. We will not have homework Fridays and over the weekend.  This means that book bags are at school ready for the following week. Homework will consist of home reading and spelling. Please help your child complete their homework. Their homework will be sent home in their book bags therefore it is important these come back to school every day please.

Our classroom has an open door, inviting you to come in, have a look and take part in our daily activities whenever you have any spare time or are in the school.  We would really appreciate your awhi and our tamariki would love to share their learning with you.

No reira,

Nau mai, haere mai ki te ruma o Ono.

Na,

Whaea Tia
