Curriculum Report – The Arts

Prepared by Frederika Jarvis

Focus

·      The focus of the Arts within the curriculum is promoting the school vision of being ‘Proud Prepared Learners’ through the 4 disciplines of Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Art. By using the guidelines of the New Zealand Curriculum students will have the opportunity to experience, communicate and develop their ideas.

Programme

·      In Visual Art class programmes have covered many forms and processes to tie in with their class programmes. They include the following, Self-portraits, blending and sketching, colour blending, cutting, craft activities, koru patterns and templates, collage and clay modelling, leaf art using chalk, crayons and die, paper mache, weaving, dot painting, cut out collage.

·      Music is supported in the junior classes with meetings on Tuesdays to cover singing, listening and percussion sessions. Room 6 have ukulele sessions every Friday afternoons.  The use of ICT helps to support this programme with interactive sessions and a brief introduction to rhythmic patterns. Some songs are also introduced in occasional school assemblies.

·      Dance continues to be covered through school wide Jump Jam which takes place in the middle terms. It is an area that needs expansion and experimentation.

·      Drama is a strand of the Arts that is used quite openly through classroom shared books, problem solving and social interaction. With the speech competition coming up in term 2 this is an opportunity for students to enhance their speeches with some techniques of drama. Every 2nd Friday the whole school continues to come together for Hui a Kura. This involves a Karakia, Himene and Waiata.

Looking Ahead

·      We will continue to look for opportunities to promote the Arts in Kaikohe East School. We hope to investigate and invite local artists to inspire and generate interest in perhaps creating a school mural. This will be done through school wide Art Intensive afternoon programmes.

·      In term 3: Students will be involved in the Cultural Festival, this will involve the school in music and dance.

·      In term 4: Celebration – this will involve class items or a school production.

·      The budget is intact at this stage , classroom programmes are quite well supported in resources.
