1003 Legal Responsibilities Policy Review - March 2010

30 March 2010

Kaikohe East School - Operations Policy Report - Legal Responsibilities

"The principal will not fail to ensure that:

  • School procedures meet the legislative statutes and regulations as set down in the appropriate Acts, Ministry of Education circulars and the Education Gazette"

A review of the latest version of the Education Review Office's "Self-Audit Checklist of Legal Responsibilities"1   has been used to ensure that school procedures meet the legislative statutes and regulations as set down in the appropriate acts.

The review has highlighted:

  1. A need to investigate how reporting to the school's community might happen, currently achievement as a whole is reported to the BOT and reports included in newsletters from time to time.
  2. Student absences are being successfully monitored and improvements noted particularly since the involvement in the Ministry of Education funded SEI programme.  We will be working towards electronic attendance registers for 2011 so this will provide us with good data also we hope.
  3. Health Curriculum delivery statement needs investigation and needs to be maybe included in the Annual Agenda to remind us to consult with the school community annually or once every two years.
  4. Need to investigate the inclusion of pandemic planning in the management of crisis situations.
  5. School Trips/eotc and rams forms, at times approval has to come from the Principal and not always BOT Chairperson
  6. No specific anti-bullying programmes are provided however is included in programmes such as Kiwi Can.
  7. Staff appointment process needs discussion, clarification and recording somewhere.

The review has confirmed that all other school procedures meet the legislative statutes and regulations as set down in the appropriate Acts, Ministry of Education circulars and the Education Gazette
