Curriculum Report – Physical Education

Focus: Vision

Our vision is to get more students involved in sports and health initiatives. To have more parent input and involvement in what and how sports and health initiatives are run in our kura. To have our staff including more  physical education in their programmes. To build relationships with community, schools and other organisations to create more interschool tournaments and in school training sessions.

Programme:

Term 1:

  • This year started with Water Safety NZ coming into our school during the first term and completing workshops with each class, promoting water safety skills. Each class was given 4 sessions.

  • Mrs Stillwell and Kelli took a group of tamariki to Waitangi to participate in the 2017 Weetbix Tryathlon.

  • Our school hockey team participated in the Hockey Fun Fest at Lindvart Park.

  • Bikes, teachers can take their tamariki on their own accord. Helmets are provided.

  • PE gear is put out every morning tea and lunchtime.


Term 2:

  • x2 Netball and x2 Hockey teams participated every Saturday morning at Lindvart. Training was held during lunchtimes once or twice a week.

  • Fire Brigade Sports - Hockey, Netball, Soccer and Rippa Rugby with local schools.

  • Project Energize - Bodene came into school a few times to meet with our sports monitors and took a rotation of class sessions for skill development. For juniors it was Fundamental skills such as; hopping, balance and skipping. With the seniors and middles he helped train for Fire Brigade Sports.

  • Bodene completed the 500m run test with all 8 year olds and above.

  • Bikes, teachers can take their tamariki on their own accord. Helmets are provided.

  • PE gear is put out every morning tea and lunchtime.


Term 3:

  • Kaikohe East School Cross Country Event held at Lindvart Park. Whole school participation was essential. Training took place most afternoons.

  • Inter School Cross Country at Ohaeawai.

  • x2 Netball teams participated every Saturday morning at Lindvart.Training was held during lunchtimes once or twice a week.

  • Bodene from Project Energize took Staff at after school Hockey skills.

  • Bikes, teachers can take their tamariki on their own accord. Helmets are provided.

  • PE gear is put out every morning tea and lunchtime.


Term 4:

  • 2x  T-Ball teams played at Lindvart Park every Wednesday. Training was held lunchtimes and in the afternoon blocks.

  • 4x Touch teams played at Lindvart Park every Thursday. Training was held lunchtimes and in the afternoon blocks.

  • Room 15 tamariki participated in the Kaikohekohe Primary Games with local schools over 2 days at Lindvart Park.

  • 1x Rugby and 1x Netball team participated in the Whakapakiri Cup challenge in Ohaeawai.

  • Bodene from Project Energize worked with the touch teams for training.

  • Swimming commenced again from week 4, with teachers taking classes for basic swimming skills.

  • PE gear is put out every morning tea and lunchtime.

Assessment Procedures:

  • We reflect on previous years and compare numbers of student involvement in weekend sports.

  • We reflect on how many sports initiatives and opportunities have been taken.

  • We reflect on which tamariki are participating and which are opting out of Physical Education and why they are doing so.

  • Swim safe complete an overall assessment once sessions have concluded. This involves ensuring tamariki are able to float, tread water and immerse.

  • Recording of each individual running time during training sessions leading up to our Cross Country event.

Trend Analysis:

  • The results show that this year we have been very much involved with anything and everything that has been available to us in our area.  However, there seem to be the same tamariki involved throughout all of the sports. We would like to encourage different players also.

  • Teachers really need to come on board with the teaching of Physical Education as there still does not seem to be much included in their classroom programmes. This could be where our Poutama class come in as ‘leaders’ and help run junior sports or activities in the afternoons.

  • The need for a sound Physical Education Programme within our school is still very  high. It is successful however, more tamariki can be participating if we had the support.

Students and Groups of Students at risk:

  • Tamariki who are not participating in Physical Education

  • Kids who live out of town and can’t make it to practices or games after school hours.

  • Students with a physical restriction i.e. Wheelchair.

Teaching and learning strategies to address the above:

  • Regular promotion of physical health, make it fun and encourage teachers to try different ways of getting their tamariki to be active. Ten minute brain breaks: Maori Movement, Jump Jam, Hip Hop etc.

  • Getting in touch with parents of the kids who are keen but can’t come into town and working out places for them to stay on these nights.

  • Holding our own sports events during the day so that tamariki from out of town can participate.

  • Liaise with Kaz our SENCO and help the Special Rights tamariki be more involved in sports in our community i.e Wheelchair basketball, Special Olympics etc.

Looking Ahead:

  • We will continue to get coaches in from Sport Northland to promote Physical education.   

  • The bikes and track need to be developed more and become a regular part of Physical activity for our students. Gear needs to be looked after better.

  • A push will be given towards the teaching of Physical Education in our school and getting teachers on Board. Teachers need to be encouraged and reminded of the importance of Physical Education and how it can help our tamariki and their well-being.  We can give the teachers ideas of how we can integrate it into their day to day classroom timetables without taking up too much Literacy and Numeracy time.

  • Be organised and have a Physical Education Overview made up of each of the sports events that are throughout the year so teacher and whanau know well in advance. Display all events for each term on the whiteboard in the staffroom.

  • Delegate more; have more teachers and whanau involved in our sports programme as our tamariki love participating, however, due to shortage of coaches/supervision at events we are unable to cater for them all.
