Curriculum Report – The Arts


  • The focus of the Arts within the curriculum is promoting the school vision of being ‘Proud Prepared Learners’ through the 4 disciplines of Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Art.

  • By using the guidelines of the New Zealand Curriculum students will have the opportunity to experience, communicate and develop their ideas .Classes are relating these disciplines to the provocation and inquiry topics in their programmes.


  • Music and Dance is incorporated within hui-a-kura and morning Karakia, whole school Kapa Haka.

  • Drama is implemented through classroom shared books, journal plays, problem solving and social interaction contexts including visits from Duffy theatre and Life Ed caravan.

  • Visual Art is taught in classrooms as it relates to the provocation or inquiry topic at the time.

  • Some classes are involved in whakairo (carving) in classes as  their visual arts programme linked to the Marae noho at Ngawha Marae.

  • The visit to Ngawha Marae has inspired classes and teachers to deliver Ngā Toi  which has included flax weaving (rāranga), carving, and tī rākau.

Looking Ahead

  • We will continue to look for opportunities to promote the Arts in Kaikohe East School. We still need to investigate and invite local artists to inspire and generate interest.

  • Looking into creating a Sensory Area  that includes textured areas, herb garden and water wall for our Special Rights children - possibly between Room 12 and 13.

  • To continue to improve our children’s Kapa Haka skills.  Weekly Syndicate Kapa Haka practice open to all classes who are interested and encouraging all classes to participate. This has been further inspired by our recent overnight visit to a local Marae so children, staff and whānau feel more connected to the songs, waiata and karakia that they are learning in a school setting.

  • Look for opportunities for children to see more Maori role models acting, television Radio and presenting to children such as in Duffy theatre.

  • Involve our school in  opportunities that raise awareness of those with special rights or illness through creative fundraising events such as Mad Hair Day for Kids cancer, Odd shoe day and Sign language awareness week.
