1503 The Arts - 25 March 2015

  • The focus of the Arts within the curriculum is promoting the school vision of being ‘Proud Prepared Learners’ through the 4 disciplines of Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Art. By using the guidelines of the New Zealand Curriculum students will have the opportunity to experience, communicate and develop their ideas .Classes are relating these disciplines to the provocation and inquiry topics in their programmes.


  • Music and Dance is incorporated within hui-a-kura and morning Karakia, whole school Kapa Haka, classroom Jump Jam, as a lunchtime activity and through use of Ukulele and guitars.

  • Drama is implemented through classroom shared books, journal plays, problem solving and social interaction contexts.

  • Visual Art is taught in classrooms as it relates to the provocation or inquiry topic at the time. On top of this Fredi Jarvis has set up an Art Room to teach art to all classes during teachers CRT days.

Looking Ahead

  • We will continue to look for opportunities to promote the Arts in Kaikohe East School. We still need to investigate and invite local artists to inspire and generate interest. One project to be taken on is to invite an artist to paint/spray paint/graffiti our PE container and bike container to brighten up the look.

  • The concrete is also being repainted to spruce up the visual impact of our school.

  • This year we want to really improve our childrens Kapa Haka skills. We hope to continue our weekly Kapa Haka practice open to all classes who are interested.

  • Look for opportunities for children to see more Maori people acting or in television.
